Optical vs. Laser Mice: What's the Difference?
Both optical and laser mice track movement by taking thousands of tiny snapshots of the surface below them every second. The difference lies in the light source they use — and that has real consequences for accuracy and versatility.
How optical mice work
Optical mice use an LED — usually red — to illuminate the surface. A tiny camera captures the reflected light and a processor calculates movement. They excel on mouse pads and other opaque, textured surfaces, and they tend to be extremely accurate for gaming.
How laser mice work
Laser mice replace the LED with a laser. Because a laser penetrates deeper into a surface's microscopic texture, laser mice can track on a wider range of surfaces — including glossy tabletops and even glass (with the right sensor).
Which should you pick?
